Brother QL red and black printing requires the correct printer, a Black/Red on White DK-2251 roll, and matching software settings. Brother lists this roll for QL-800, QL-810W and QL-820NWB. Select the two-color media mode even when printing only black on that roll; choosing red text alone does not configure the supply.
Check three things before changing the design
Start with the model printed on the machine, the complete roll code and the application sending the job. These identify three different causes of failure: an unreviewed printer relationship, the wrong media, or a print job that describes the loaded media incorrectly.
The DK-2251 reverse lookup brings the reviewed model relationships and manufacturer references together. Use the printer and SKU finder if you started with a box of rolls instead of a printer name. A search result identifies a record; its evidence table establishes what has actually been confirmed.
This guide addresses missing red output and two-color media mismatch messages. If every label is completely blank, use the separate blank-label diagnosis. If you are deciding between address labels, film and continuous paper, the QL-800 media selection guide owns that broader buying question.
| Check | Evidence to inspect | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Printer | Exact model's manufacturer consumables list | Support for every similarly named model |
| Roll | DK-2251 identity and Black/Red on White description | Equivalent behavior from an unidentified replacement |
| Print job | Selected printer, media mode and object colors | Physical compatibility of the installed roll |
DK-2251 is a specific supply, not any 62 mm roll
Brother's US DK-2251 product page describes continuous paper for black and red printing on white, measuring 62 mm wide and approximately 15.2 m long. The model-specific supply pages give the metric length as 15.24 m. That length describes the roll quantity, not one finished label.
Compare it with DK-2205, a 62 mm continuous paper roll for black printing on white, supplied at 30.48 m. Both are continuous paper and share a nominal width, but those similarities do not make their color capability or job settings interchangeable.
Do not read the three-dimensional carton measurements on a shopping page as label dimensions. For this purchase, keep the SKU, print colors, roll width and supplied length on the same line of your stock record. A description that says only “62 mm Brother labels” leaves the decisive distinction out.
Practical example: a shelf label with black item names and red attention text needs the two-color supply and a two-color job. An ordinary black-only shelf label can instead use an appropriate monochrome roll. Decide which output you need before comparing roll quantities or changing an existing template.
Which reviewed printers support this roll?
LabelCompat has separately reviewed Brother's US two-color consumables pages for the three models below. Each explicitly names DK-2251. These are OEM relationships, supported by exact product listings rather than inferred from width, the QL family name or a successful print reported by someone else.
| Printer | Status | Primary evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Brother QL-800 | Confirmed compatible | QL-800 two-color supply listing |
| Brother QL-810W | Confirmed compatible | QL-810W two-color supply listing |
| Brother QL-820NWB | Confirmed compatible | QL-820NWB two-color supply listing |
Brother's current pages also show some model names with a “c” suffix. The database entries linked here retain their existing exact identities; this review does not create separate revision records or promise that every software instruction is identical across revisions. Use the documentation matching your machine when its full identifier differs.
For another printer, absence from this table means that this article has not established its relationship. It does not create a negative compatibility verdict. Look up that exact model rather than treating a larger QL number as proof of more color capability.
Separate media selection from text color
The media setting describes the roll. The color setting describes what an object should print. Keeping these separate explains an initially surprising requirement: a black-only design on DK-2251 still needs the application's Black/Red media mode, according to Brother's two-color support instructions.
For the Windows P-touch Editor 5.x interface documented by Brother, Express mode has a Paper tab with Detect Size and Colors. After detecting the roll, use the Text controls to choose object colors. Professional mode uses Paper and Check Media; the Color palette is available through View, then Property Palette.
These are version-scoped controls, not a promise about every current editor interface. If your screen differs, check the application version and follow the matching manufacturer instructions. Do not substitute a similarly named control whose purpose is uncertain.
- Select the printer that actually holds the intended roll.
- Confirm the roll code before changing the template.
- Use the documented media-detection or media-selection control.
- Check text, fill, line and background colors separately.
- Print one simple comparison label before returning to the full job.
As a practical test, put one short black word and one short red word in a new label. This removes imported artwork, complex formatting and variable data from the first comparison. Keep the original design unchanged so that a successful simple test can be compared with it.
Read the mismatch message in the correct direction
“Black/Red media is installed” identifies a disagreement between the installed roll and the application's media mode. Brother's Windows instructions give two routes: cancel and fit suitable monochrome media, or retain the Black/Red roll and enable two-color mode. Choose the route that matches the job you intend to produce.
“Monochrome media is installed” is the opposite situation. For a two-color job, Brother instructs the user to cancel, install the Black/Red on White roll and enable the two-color setting before retrying. Increasing darkness does not perform that media change.
| Observation | Next check |
|---|---|
| Black/Red media message | Does the job expect monochrome stock while a two-color roll is loaded? |
| Monochrome media message | Does the requested two-color job have the required roll installed? |
| Job prints, but red is missing | Check the object's color after confirming roll and media mode. |
| Everything is blank | Follow the separate blank-output diagnosis rather than assuming a color-only issue. |
Record the exact message rather than paraphrasing both as “wrong labels.” They point in different directions. On a shared workstation, also record which printer queue received the job; changing the settings for another printer does not test the intended setup.
Mac and other applications need their own settings
Brother's support page distinguishes Mac editor versions. For P-touch Editor 5.2 or later in that documented workflow, choose the Black/Red entry in Print Media. Its older 5.1 instructions instead use the Paper inspector and Two-Color Mode. Use the branch that matches your software.
For other Windows applications, Brother documents Black/Red under the driver's Paper Type. This matters when a label works in P-touch Editor but fails from another program: the successful editor test does not prove that the second program sends the same media settings.
Compare one application at a time. Save the working configuration with the template, including the printer queue, roll code and application version. If the second application cannot expose the required setting, consult its printer support documentation instead of silently changing the physical media specification.
Check output quality after compatibility and mode
The QL-800 manual distinguishes color-range, brightness and contrast adjustments from Black/Red print density. It also states that High Resolution mode cannot be selected for two-color printing. These controls should not be confused with selecting the correct roll in the first place.
Keep any test change small and recorded. Compare the same label before and after, then restore the prior setting if the result is worse. Changing several controls together makes it difficult to identify which adjustment affected the output.
Use text as well as color to convey important information. For example, a red heading can accompany a written status rather than carry the status by itself. This is practical design guidance, not a claim that a color choice satisfies a safety, shipping or accessibility standard.
LabelCompat has not physically tested these printers or rolls. Its compatibility claims come from the manufacturer records cited below. Local print quality, adhesive suitability and the receiving workflow remain separate acceptance checks for your actual job.
Keep OEM proof separate from replacement claims
A third-party product advertised as a DK-2251 replacement has its own manufacturer, construction and evidence. The OEM relationship shown here does not automatically verify it. Obtain the replacement's exact identity and its two-color support evidence rather than accepting width or appearance as sufficient.
When asking for help, include the printer model, roll code, whether it is OEM or a replacement, software version and exact message. Explain whether the simple black/red comparison label worked. Those details help distinguish an evidence gap from a settings mismatch without guessing at a hardware fault.
- Reorder by the complete SKU and required print colors.
- Keep the working media mode with the saved template.
- Recheck the mode when staff switch between monochrome and two-color rolls.
- Use Report an Error for a documented discrepancy in a LabelCompat record.
