Brother QL-800 Labels: DK Rolls, Sizes & Compatibility

By LabelCompat · Published · Modified

Brother QL-800 labels should be selected from the printer's model-specific DK roll list. Confirmed examples include DK-1201 address labels, DK-1202 shipping labels and DK-2205 continuous paper. Choose the exact format and material as well as dimensions; a shipping description alone does not mean a label is 4 × 6 inches.

The QL-800 selection problem is usually about the job as much as the roll. A fixed address layout, a small equipment identifier and a variable-length shelf description need different media decisions. Begin with the information and required format, then choose a documented supply.

The QL-800 printer page lists current recorded relationships. The broader label printer labels pillar explains how Brother DK differs from tape cassettes and open-format thermal supplies.

Use the QL-800 consumables list as the starting point

Brother maintains a United States QL-800 DK roll catalog. It identifies exact supplies with dimensions and categories. That source is more useful for a compatibility decision than a retailer search containing the broad words “Brother thermal labels.”

LabelCompat records a selective group from that list. Each confirmed product is tied to the model-specific source, rather than being inferred from the DK prefix. The database does not claim that its initial group is the manufacturer's entire range.

Do not transfer the list automatically to QL-810W, QL-820NWB, QL-1100 or QL-1110NWB. Those are separate models and need their own source review. An apparently related model name does not establish identical support for every roll.

Fixed address labels: start with DK-1201

DK-1201 is recorded as a 29 × 90 mm die-cut paper address label. Its fixed shape provides a repeatable canvas for a recurring layout. Before choosing it, check whether the longest actual address or identifier can be represented legibly within that canvas.

The useful question is not simply how many lines can be squeezed onto the label. Decide which information the recipient needs, inspect the preview and avoid reducing text to an unreadable size. Addresses with longer names or additional organizational information deserve a representative sample.

The dimensions identify the label stock, not a guarantee that a particular carrier, marketplace or application accepts that output. Check the requirements of the system producing the label. A printer-supported roll and a compliant shipping document are separate conditions.

If fixed dimensions are inconvenient for your varying text, compare continuous material rather than assuming a larger font or altered scaling will solve every problem. The continuous versus die-cut guide explains that choice in detail.

Shipping labels do not all mean 4 × 6

Brother describes DK-1202 as shipping labels and lists the size as 62 × 100 mm. Those dimensions are much smaller than 4 × 6 inches, which converts to 101.6 × 152.4 mm. The shared shipping category does not make the formats interchangeable.

A shipping workflow may require a particular page size, barcode scale or document layout. Confirm those requirements before ordering media. Do not assume a required 4 × 6 document can be reduced to DK-1202 without affecting its intended use.

For any barcode-based workflow, inspect the output and follow the issuing system's specifications. This guide does not certify that arbitrary resized labels will scan or be accepted. Compatibility information answers the media question; the operational label requirements still need their own check.

Small identification labels: avoid crowded layouts

DK-1204 is a 17 × 54 mm die-cut paper example in the recorded list. Its smaller area makes information selection especially valuable. A short inventory identifier may work better than a long description repeated from a database.

Consider the user's next action. If a label exists to identify a drawer, plain text may be the priority. If it exists to connect an item to a record, a stable identifier may be enough, provided the associated process is clear to the people using it.

Check actual placement before producing a batch. The label must avoid seams, fasteners or heavily curved areas that interfere with reading or application. Printer support does not establish the suitability of every surface or the consequences of later adhesive removal.

Continuous paper offers a different layout decision

DK-2205 is listed as 62 mm continuous paper with a supplied length of 30.48 m. DK-2210 is a narrower 29 mm continuous paper example with the same listed length. These rolls let the job's length become part of the layout rather than selecting a fixed die-cut rectangle.

Continuous does not mean unlimited. Consult the QL-800's documentation and software for actual label-length and cutting settings. The total length on the roll is a supply quantity, not an assurance that the machine can produce one label of that entire length.

For variable descriptions, use the longest normal example to check the chosen width and layout. A short label that previews neatly does not show whether an unusually long name will create an inconvenient strip or crowd the text.

  • Choose a documented roll for QL-800.
  • Distinguish roll width from finished label length.
  • Check the printer and application length controls.
  • Preview the longest ordinary content.
  • Inspect a sample and its cut boundaries.
  • Save the layout settings for repeat work.

Paper and film are not interchangeable assumptions

DK-2212 is recorded as 62 mm continuous film supplied at 15.24 m. DK-2205 is 62 mm continuous paper supplied at 30.48 m. Matching width therefore leaves both a material difference and a quantity difference unresolved.

Choose the material based on documented requirements for the application. Film is not a universal promise of resistance to every chemical or environment, and paper is not automatically unsuitable for every demanding job. Obtain exact product information when a property is consequential.

Compare offers only after the material choice is settled. A roll with half the stated length may serve a different purpose rather than represent a worse version of the same product. Per-roll price alone cannot resolve that distinction.

If the mounting surface is sensitive, follow the product instructions and evaluate the specific use. Do not interpret the QL-800 consumables list as a statement about adhesive removal, long-term surface effects or compliance with a separate labeling standard.

Keep the software layout aligned with the supply

Color capability adds another selection check. Brother's separate QL-800 two-color consumables page lists DK-2251 Black/Red on White paper, 62 mm wide and 15.24 m long. The standard roll list used for the examples above is therefore not the whole purchasing route when the job needs red output.

DK-2205Black on white30.48 mChoose for a suitable monochrome job.
DK-2251Black/red on white15.24 mUse Black/Red media mode, even for black-only artwork.

For example, adding a red status word to a shelf-label design requires more than selecting red text. Check that the actual roll is the two-color product and that the application describes it correctly. Width, paper construction and continuous format cannot settle that decision by themselves.

Keep the SKU and color requirement with the saved template when staff share the printer. A media-mode mismatch can stop a job even though the OEM roll is supported by the QL-800. The red and black printing guide explains the settings and error messages; this comparison helps choose the supply before that setup.

Even a confirmed roll can produce an unsuitable document if the application uses the wrong page definition. Select the actual supply format in the available printer or label settings, then inspect the preview before printing a batch.

For die-cut stock, check that content stays inside the intended label boundary. For continuous stock, check the chosen length and resulting division between labels. These are layout checks, not permission to improvise unsupported sensor settings or bypass the manufacturer's loading procedure.

If the output is unexpectedly scaled, cropped or displaced, preserve the original document and identify the selected media settings. Diagnose the configuration with the printer's documentation rather than immediately concluding that the physical roll is incompatible.

Evaluate third-party DK-style rolls independently

A seller may advertise a replacement against DK-1201 or DK-2205. That establishes the seller's intended comparison, not that the product is genuine Brother media. Record its actual identity and separate the seller's support claim from the OEM relationship.

A matching width does not establish the complete feed and recognition requirements. Likewise, borrowing the OEM dimensions cannot establish the material formulation of an alternative. A substitute needs appropriate evidence of its own before it can become a definitive compatibility record.

LabelCompat's verification method keeps those claim layers separate. It also avoids ranking a media relationship more favorably because a merchant might eventually pay a commission.

Handle missing evidence without false exclusions

If your DK product is missing from the site, check the full manufacturer catalog. The initial records are selective and do not constitute an exhaustive supported set. Absence from LabelCompat is not a reason to mark a supply NOT COMPATIBLE.

For an additional relationship, provide the exact model, SKU and manufacturer URL through Report an Error. If another QL model is involved, include its own source rather than only the QL-800 page.

The practical buying sequence is to identify the required document, choose a supported DK identity, verify the material and dimensions, then inspect the layout. Each step answers a different question; keeping them separate avoids confusing a valid roll with a guarantee of every finished-label use.

Recheck a template when changing DK format

Moving between DK-1201 and a continuous roll changes the physical assumptions of the document. Keep the original template available, create the new layout for the actual width and supported finished length, and review representative long entries. A correct QL-800 relationship alone does not prove that the old layout still fits.
