DYMO LabelWriter 4XL Labels: Sizes, SKUs & Options

By LabelCompat · Published · Modified

DYMO explicitly names the LabelWriter 4XL for its 1744907 extra-large shipping labels. Choose that exact roll identity or separately verify an alternative, including direct thermal coating, registration and physical fit. The familiar 4 × 6 description alone cannot establish that a shipping roll is suitable for the 4XL.

A shipping-label purchase starts with the whole workflow

The 4XL is often considered when the job involves shipping documents, but “shipping label” is an application description, not one universal consumable. The printable document, the physical label and the printer must work together. A roll marketed for parcels can still be wrong for the particular machine.

Start at the LabelWriter 4XL requirements page to see the verified answer and evidence. Use the label printer labels pillar if you are comparing the DYMO system with a Brother, Zebra or Rollo setup.

Before ordering, establish whether you are replacing a known working roll or introducing a new supply. For a repeat purchase, the original carton provides a stronger reference than a remembered measurement. For a new supply, collect the exact part number and manufacturer support information before comparing pack prices.

The verified 1744907 example

DYMO's extra-large shipping-label product page identifies 1744907 and expressly names the 4XL and 5XL. That is stronger compatibility evidence than a retail title containing a long list of printer names.

The 1744907 media record preserves this product identity and its source. It does not imply that these are the only supplies a 4XL can accept. A confirmed example and a complete supported-products catalog are different kinds of answer.

This difference is useful when you encounter another roll. An alternative is not automatically incompatible because it is absent from the launch catalog. It needs its own evidence, and until that evidence is sufficient the relationship remains UNKNOWN rather than being promoted by visual similarity.

A seller may use 1744907 as a replacement reference for its own product. In that case, the product being sold is not automatically the manufacturer item recorded here. Check the actual brand and identifier before assuming the confirmed OEM relationship applies to it.

Why the size description needs a careful reading

The DYMO product page uses a nominal 4 × 6 inch description while also displaying 104 × 159 mm. An exact mathematical conversion of 4 × 6 inches is 101.6 × 152.4 mm. These values are not equivalent, so LabelCompat keeps the discrepancy visible instead of selecting whichever figure looks more convenient.

The practical response is to verify the packaging and the label layout used by your software. Do not take measurements labeled as carton or package dimensions and use them as label dimensions. A boxed roll has several physical measurements that are irrelevant to the document's print area.

This is also why a size filter cannot be the final compatibility decision. Even an exact finished-label match would not establish registration, coating or roll fit. Size is useful for narrowing the task; product evidence must finish the check.

If a document supplied by a shipping service does not match the selected page size, inspect its intended format before adjusting it. Avoid shrinking an entire document until it appears to fit without checking text and barcode readability. A technically printed label is not necessarily a usable shipping label.

The 4XL uses a complete roll system

The older LabelWriter user guide explicitly includes the 4XL and describes direct thermal printing. It also explains the importance of registration holes between labels. The print process and feed-position system both belong in the purchase check.

A generic direct thermal roll may satisfy only the image-forming requirement. A roll designed around another printer's sensing method is not established as a 4XL supply by its thermal coating. The label backing and registration layout deserve the same attention as the visible face.

  1. Confirm the roll is intended for direct thermal printing.
  2. Identify model-specific support for the complete product.
  3. Check label registration and roll construction.
  4. Resolve the exact size needed by your document.
  5. Follow the 4XL loading instructions.
  6. Review a small output sample before a full batch.

Do not reuse the 450 technical reference's paper-path figures for the 4XL. That document names a different set of covered models. When a specification has not been verified for the exact printer, an honest gap is more useful than an apparently precise borrowed number.

Compare the 4XL with the 450 and 5XL correctly

The 450 and 4XL share a manufacturer user guide, but shared documentation does not mean every size or supply is shared. A document may explain common loading principles while keeping model-specific hardware differences elsewhere. Read the individual product relationship rather than the cover title alone.

The 5XL belongs to the later guide that explicitly lists the 550, 550 Turbo and 5XL. That guide requires Authentic DYMO LW Labels and states that non-authentic rolls are not recognized. A third-party claim made for the 4XL therefore cannot be carried across to the 5XL by analogy.

DYMO's 1744907 product page names both XL models, which supports that OEM example. It does not erase the 5XL recognition requirement, and it does not validate unrelated third-party alternatives. Read the newer generation's restrictions before transferring supplies between machines.

Buying third-party rolls for the 4XL

Ask for a statement that identifies the exact seller product and the LabelWriter 4XL by name. A listing that says only “works with thermal printers” has not answered the question. Save the response and check return terms before committing to a large order.

The older user guide recommends DYMO-branded labels and excludes malfunction or damage caused by third-party labels from its stated warranty coverage. That does not justify the broader claim that all warranty rights disappear whenever another brand is used. It is also not the same statement as the later generation's recognition restriction.

See the DYMO compatible labels guide for evaluating these claims. LabelCompat keeps seller assertions separate from manufacturer-supported facts, so a lower price cannot change a compatibility status or elevate an unsupported listing.

Make loading and layout checks before blaming the roll

The user guide's loading instructions call for a snug fit on the spool and correct alignment through the label path. A loose spool guide can let the roll move, while an incorrectly positioned label guide can interfere with feeding. Check those mechanical details against the illustrated manual.

Choose the actual roll format in the printing application and inspect orientation. If the software is still using a previous address-label setting, changing the physical roll will not change that saved document. Check the printer selected in the dialog too, particularly in a workspace containing several similar machines.

Print a representative sample that includes real content. A blank outline cannot reveal whether a lengthy address clips or a barcode has been distorted by scaling. Evaluate the sample against the receiving workflow, then retain the working layout settings with the roll identifier.

  • Check the printer selected in the print dialog.
  • Match the saved page size to the actual roll.
  • Inspect orientation and scaling together.
  • Use a sample with realistic text and symbols.
  • Keep the original document for troubleshooting.

Storage and parcel conditions still matter

Direct thermal compatibility describes how a label prints, not how it survives every journey. The DYMO guide warns about exposure to light and heat and recommends protective storage. Keep spare rolls in suitable conditions rather than near a hot window or exposed to dusty packing work.

Adhesion is a separate application question. A clean, dry carton presents a different surface from a dirty, textured or damp parcel. Follow the label manufacturer's application guidance and avoid claiming environmental durability that the product source does not document.

For a business changing carton materials, test the intended surface as part of its own packing validation. LabelCompat's source review does not replace that evaluation and does not claim hands-on testing of your rolls or packaging.

Keep enough information to reorder reliably

A useful supply record connects the 4XL model, roll product number, manufacturer source, observed package size and saved print layout. Update the record when the supplier or product changes. This prevents a replacement-reference listing from silently becoming the new purchasing standard.

If your carton or a newer manufacturer source resolves the nominal-size discrepancy, use Report an Error and include the exact source. A correction should improve the evidence behind the public answer, rather than replacing one unsupported measurement with another.

Retain the shipping template with the roll record

Keep the shipping platform's selected label format alongside the exact 4XL supply identity. A change in export format can alter the document even when the roll remains unchanged. When reviewing a replacement workflow, inspect both records before adjusting scale or attributing clipped content to the physical labels.
